Classroom Duties

Over many years in the field of Education as a Principal, Teacher, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Stathis evolved a system of classroom management which he sub-titles: "Classroom Management that manages itself!"

This management system is tied equally into what Mr. Stathis terms a "Miniature Economy" system for positively reinforcing students in multiple ways.

Shown in the photo below are Classroom 16's Classroom Duties. Students hold a Duty for a period of a week and change to another the following week. A few of these Duties themselves change from time-to-time.

Built into the system is a sense of student "belonging" and a sense of responsibility to their own education and the education of their classmates by having a Duty that serves the class. More follows below with deatils on what each Duty actually is for those not apparent simply by the title of the job.

Parents are encouraged to talk with their child about his/her Classroom Duty each and every week as the year unfolds.

Below is an interesting set of explanations of some of these particular Duties.

This saying which was tradionally read in unison by all after the Duties for the week were picked every Monday, is jokingly paraphrased from a line from the famous movie, Ben Hur (1959 version).

Deputy Steward: This is the "top job" as Mr. Stathis always said he was the Chief Steward, or servant of everyone, serving everyone's education, so the Deputy to him was to manage all the others in their Duties, to ensure their duties were done; and mainly the "Duty" of being Good, and keeping track of "The X Chart" that gave an X by a student's name in the Deputy Steward's folder list when Mr. Stathis gave an infraction of a student for "not being good in behavior. The Deputy Steward was always first to fil-in for a student's Duty if the student was absent.

Master of the Class: The Master helped all in be orderly when order was needed, in charge of the student Lines when going from place-to-place, counting down in class for everyone to get focused for the next lesson, etc. As "2nd in Command" to the Deputy Steward, the Master of the CLass was second to fill-in for a Duty if a second student was absent.

Right-Hand Person: 3rd in hierarchy, this person's Duty was to be there at Mr. Stathis's "right hand" when needed for a task to get the class going on a Lesson or generally, just to help make something happe quick that needed to happen. Thus, this person was always in charge of passing-out the papers for lessons, etc.

Guest Greeter: And 4th in hierarchy was this person whose job was, 1) to be first into the Classroom in the morning, after Recess, and after Lunch, to then welcome back one-by-one each student as he or she entered the classroom with a positive comment and a hand-shake or "fist-bump." The idea of the job title is that everyone is a "Guest" in the "house of learning." ...to start all and everything out again in the classroom with a positive feeling of belonging to all. The Guest Greeter was also in charge of conveying a welcome to any adult Guest that might enter the room for some purpose.

All the other Duties are self-explanatory by their job title.

Note: That Photo from the Newspaper, the man looking somewhat upward but purveying the Student Duties, is Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, who was still alive at this time. The idea, the inspiration is that all children, every individual can achieve greatness, the fulfillment of great dreams, if one works hard at it.
